Guest Post — 9 Tips to Brighten Your Bathroom

February 15, 2014 by Fotini Filed Under: bathrooms, decor, home, home decor 4 Comments

Please help me give a warm welcome to today’s guest post, Sue!

Hello! My name is Sue Jason and I am a blogger at My-bathrooms blog. I have a passion for sharing ideas which include home improvement and décor.
9 Tips to Brighten Your Bathroom

Source
Having a bright and cheerful bathroom is a must and these days it is easy to find a host of small features and products that can spruce up a dull or boring bathroom in next to no time!
1)   Cleanliness First!

Source
No matter how amazing your décor scheme, your bathroom will look unsightly and grubby if it is not kept beautifully clean. If you have stains and signs of age creeping into your bathroom, it is definitely time for a new coat of paint or a renewal of the wallpaper! Set aside a few hours and make your bathroom sparkle as best you can as this one act can make a huge difference to the ambiance and atmosphere of your bathroom.
2)   Matching Accessories

Source
Buying a set of matching accessories from Macysfor your bathroom is such an easy task that it almost feels like a cheat! Decant shampoo, hand wash and shower gel into matching containers and keep toothbrushes and odds and ends (like earrings) in another pair of matched containers and see how pulled together and professional your bathroom can look!
3)   Plenty of Storage

Source
Finding enough storage space in a bathroom can be a bit of a struggle, but it is a battle well worth winning. Sufficient storage means no clutter, and no clutter makes a bathroom look great! Try to allocate every member of the family their own space in the bathroom and make every responsible for keeping their area neat and tidy.
4)   Fresh Flowers

Source
A cheerful pot plant or vase of fragrant and colorful flowers can instantly add a natural air and some much-needed color and brightness to your bathroom. There is something inherently decadent about fresh flowers anyway, and having them in the bathroom infuses it with luxury.
5)   Splash of Color
Source
If your bathroom is predominantly neutral or plain colored, do not be afraid to add in a lavish splash of color to enliven the atmosphere and make the room pop! Many bathrooms are so muted and bland that they lose any charm or interest that they might otherwise have had: offset this by being generous with touches of color.
6)   Potpourri
Source
To make your bathroom smell nice and look good at the same time, why not invest in a couple of bags of potpourri (or make your own!) and a pretty dish to put it in?
7)   Unusual Hanging Points

Source
Instead of the usual towel rail or door hooks, look for hanging points with a difference. Asymmetrical hangers, freestanding towel racks and unusual hooks and hoops can all brighten up the dreariest bathroom.
8)   Mirrors and Lights

Source
Invest in a unique and attractive mirror, such as this lovely illuminated one from My Bathrooms that oozes glamour and also helps you look good!
9)   Points of Interest
Source

No matter how small and cramped your bathroom is, try to make space for attractive points of interest such as a jar full of shells, a vignette featuring some attractive family photos, or even just a single lovely ornament.

1. I’ve really been intrigued by the black, white and gold color combo lately! And it’s no wonder why this adorable decor caught my eye, it’s so bold! It’s a super sweet addition to a classy office or teenage girls room!
2. Invite your guests to your next get together in style! These particular invitations are for a bridal shower, but can be used for any occasion! I think they’re adorable, but then again, I have a slight obsession with glitter so I might just be biased 😉
3. What a cute way to add some bling to your decor! Whether it be in your office or even adding a little decor to your closet. This little gem comes from an adorable Etsy shop where you an purchase it, and/or others, to add to your space!
4. I am really in love with this color scheme for a party or bridal shower! The sparkle adds the perfect touch of class. The pops of color with the fresh flowers make this look complete!

Fab Pins of the Week

January 31, 2014 by Fotini Filed Under: brights, decor, fresh flowers, home, home decor, neturals, Pinterest 1 Comment

It’s Friday, woohoo! Any big plans for the weekend?
Nothing specific here, just catching up on some errands I’ve not been able to get done with the crazy Polar Vortex we’ve been having!
With that being said, I’ve been drawn to beautiful brights, I’m craving Spring! 🙂

3. source  4. source
1. I love love love the simplicity of this living room! The beautiful bright whites pairs perfectly with the spurts of gold and metallics! Not to mention that beautiful burst of color in the painting! A room like this wouldn’t stay white for long in my house, but it sure is pretty to look at 🙂
2. I really love the thoughts of have a neutral room and using fresh flowers and something as simple as books to add color and bring life into a room! It’s basically a blank slate that can be changed up, moved around and re-decorated at any time! I’m thinking this is going to be more the route I go with for my home office! You can even take any books you may have or even books from the thrift store and wrap them in your desired wrapping paper to blend better with your decor! Target has some adorable white and metallic gold striped wrapping paper right now that would be perfect paired with some pops of color added in!
3. This would be perfect as a guest room! What a beautiful, bright and inviting design! I love the mix of pink, orange and red together! The gray and white really make these colors pop, I love it! You can never go wrong with adding a gorgeous crystal chandelier to any bedroom! It’s the perfect statement piece to any room!
4. Again, a room like this wouldn’t last long at my house, but I love the thoughts of it! White couches and chairs, ah! The pops of color and pattern in with the pillows, again, can easily be changed at any time but provide character for this room! Initially, I was drawn immediately to the gorgeous bouquet of fresh peonies! I love incorporating fresh flowers into my decor as often as possible!!

A Little Coat of Paint…

January 27, 2014 by Fotini Filed Under: chairs, diy, home decor, whitewashed furniture, whitewashing 14 Comments

Lately, I’ve been really into the look of whitewashed furniture. Though, I didn’t have any pieces of my own, I wanted to give it a try! I had a mismatched chair that we had at our dining room table that was in need of a pick-me-up. Inevitably, this was my next project!
I took the chair to our basement, which is a work in progress itself, so it was the perfect place to work on this project! I began with a 120 grit sandpaper to finely take off the top layer and smooth any imperfections the chair may have had. This is an old chair! Most of the original nails have been replaced with screws, but it does have one existing original nail, how cool is that!  The best advice I could give you for using the whitewashing technique is to do small areas at a time and be patient! Depending on the size of your piece, it may take you awhile to complete.
Simply begin by applying a few brush strokes of paint in a thin layer and let dry a few minutes. I just used paper towel because I had plenty of it on hand and could easily grab new pieces when needed. You could also use a white cloth of some sort, if desired. After 2-3 minutes of the paint drying, begin to wipe it away, moving back and forth in one direction. Continue until the desired finish is achieved. I recommend doing the entire piece with one coat first, and going back to do a second coat, or even third, to achieve the look you’re going for. Let the piece dry completely.
I completed this project using Miss Mustard Seed Furniture Wax. What I love about this product is it brings out the original wood so it gives the chair a truly aged look. Not to mention, I adore what a smooth finish it leaves!

DIY Crystal Iron Orb Chandelier

January 6, 2014 by Fotini Filed Under: chandelier, crystal chandelier, diy, home decor, lighting, orb chandelier, Restoration Hardware 58 Comments

I just love chandeliers! I would have one in every room if my husband would let me 😉 I think they add class and charm to a room with very little effort! Sometime last year, we were walking by Restoration Hardware and saw this absolutely stunning orb chandelier with lots of sparkly crystals! It was just breathtaking! I peeked at the price tag and saw a whopping $2,295.00. Whoa, that’s a lot of money to spend on ceiling lighting, even if it is breathtaking. I was determined to recreate that piece at a much more affordable price, and that brings us to today’s post!

I lucked out at one of my shopping trips to Homegoods, and scored an iron orb for only $24.99! I was so stinkin’ excited, I think I literally squealed!! Next, I headed to Lowe’s and picked up hanging light, similar to this one for less than $40. Once I was home, my husband drilled a hole through the iron orb on one end and fed the light cord through, and then we hung it! And when I say “we”, I mean my husband 😉

I was absolutely thrilled with how it turned out with such little effort! We kept it that way for a little while before I added crystals. I bought my crystals from Save On Crafts.com, click here for crystals! Let me warn you, if you haven’t been to this site before, brace yourself, you’re going to be browsing for hours! Their prices are incredible and their stuff is great quality! I bought stuff for my wedding from there and that’s why I decided to go back!

Anyways, I bought 2 6 foot strands of crystal garland. I began to play around with a design, attaching the crystals to the orb using fish-line and knotting it. I had about 2 feet of crystals left, so I didn’t use them all. On another occasion, I was at Hobby Lobby and spotted some raindrop crystals in a 3-pack and snatched those up real quick using my 40% off coupon! Once I got home and showed them to my husband, he opened them up and realized they were magnetic, even better!! Again, I may have squealed with excitement 🙂

This project cost me a total of $88!!! It’s not as fancy as the Restoration Hardware chandy, but it’s so beautiful and the perfect addition over our kitchen table!

So, what do you think?

3. Cabinetry lined with french-inspired details! Not to mention the gorgeous chandelier peeking out of the top of the picture! You can never go wrong with a gorgeous crystal chandelier!!
4. Initially, I’m drawn towards the pallet art in this picture, but the main feature is this beautiful buffet! She has re purposed it with beautiful, two-tone finish.

{ Making A Statement }

January 2, 2014 by Fotini Filed Under: accent chairs, decor, furniture history, home, home decor, One Kings Lane 20 Comments

In case you didn’t know already, I LOVE to decorate! What I love even more is incorporating sentimental, aged pieces into my decor! We are fortunate to have quite a few pieces that are our family heirlooms! I do, however, have some “new” additions that I really just love! I say “new” because they’re new to me, but they are visibly aged with chippy goodness!

I think the beauty of furniture and art comes out with age. The significance becomes more defined and cherished. I love looking at a piece knowing there is a history behind it! With that being said, I’m excited to share one of my favorite pieces with you today! It’s a chair that was given to me by a dear friend! I’m not quite sure of it’s exact history but just by the looks of it, I know that it’s old!

My beautiful, chippy chair is an accent to my entryway and creates the perfect charm for the rest of my decor! I’ve contemplated painting the piece but I just love the layered, original ware of it, so I’ve decided to keep it as is!

If you aren’t quite sure of the history of one of your favorite(s) chairs, you can use this fantastic Home Decor Resource from One Kings Lane! Here is a little bit of info I found out about mine! I searched under 1900-Present with so many articles relating to that era revealed! It’s a super fun- informative way to research new furniture you may be seeking or furniture you already own!

So, do tell, do you have a favorite chair in your home?

This is the bottom of the chair, you can tell the age here!

{ Fab Pins of the Week }

November 8, 2013 by Fotini Filed Under: fab pins of the week, home, home decor, Pinterest 2 Comments

Hey, hey it’s Friday!! Thanks so much for stopping by and starting your weekend out with me 🙂
Even though November has just begun, amidst planning for Thanksgiving, I can’t help but think about Christmas! After all the posts I’ve been seeing on Facebook and other social media, I know I’m not the only one!!

Let’s get to my favorites….

1. source  2. source
3. source  4. source

1. This is such a gorgeous dining room! I’m in love with the wall color! It gives off the perfect mixture of gray and brown. I must say that Victorian sofa in the back is my favorite part of this room! It screams GLAM and ties the entire space together!
2. I love comfy wraps!! One of my favorite accessories in the Fall and Winter months! Love them paired with leggings or jeans and boots! I would love to have one of each of these pictured, they’re darling! Certainly perfect for those crisp, rainy Fall days!
3. Kind of in love with these dark blue cabinets and black countertops! Far from the traditional kitchen, but it’s bold and beautiful! How do you feel about the floating shelves? I personally, would not be a fan of them, I don’t want to see my dishes on display at all times!
4. Wow, just wow! This living room is absolutely stunning! I love the bold pieces, including the huge tufted ottoman and dark-printed pillows! It looks like the perfect place to curl up with a good book after a long day, enjoying a cup of hot tea next to the fire! Wouldn’t  you agree?

My New Kitchen Light

October 21, 2013 by Fotini Filed Under: diy, home decor, kitchen light, lighting, mercury glass 33 Comments

I have a slight obsession with mercury glass and I knew I wanted to incorporate it into my new kitchen island lighting. I started browsing online, only to find super expensive options.

Similar here here ($99 each) and here (over $218 each)!! I was determined to make this work, so I headed to none other than, Homegoods! I was ecstatic when I found these pretty mercury glass candle holders and snatched up three of them. The plan was for my hubby to use a glass cutter to create a hole for it to fit on the new lighting. Well, you won’t believe what happend next… We started unscrewing the bottom of the candle holder to find a hole already there, and it fit the light fixture like a glove! Score!! Like major score. I may, or may not, have been doing the happy dance in my kitchen! Within minutes I had a gorgeous new mercury glass light fixture!!

The best part about it was the cost! Each candle holder was $9.99 and the trio mount was on sale at Lowes for about $47, which brings the total cost to $76.97!

I think it’s the perfect addition to our kitchen space and I couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out!
