Prepping kitchen for paint!

March 27, 2017 by Fotini Filed Under: kitchen Leave a Comment

This was a tedious, but oh so necessary job: prepping the kitchen for paint! Do yourself the favor and tape everything off before you begin painting! It will eliminate -oopsies and extra cleanup after. We were not painting the inside of the cabinets, so we simply removed the doors and taped off the inside edges. Once the doors are removed, make sure to remove all hardware, knobs and bumpers. Degrease cabinets using a cleaner such as, goof off. Cleaning the grease off is important in the kitchen, because those grease spots can seep through paint. This is also a good time to fill any nicks or gashes with wood filler. Sand before painting.

After a lot of consideration, we decided to go ahead and prime before we painted. The main reason we opted for this, is because we found out that the cabinetry wasn’t real wood. It was basically particle board covered in a wood-look paper. The doors, however, were real wood. We just wanted to make sure the paint would stick and hold up to the amount of wear it would be getting on a daily basis.

For the paint, we opted for DecoAart Americana Decor Satin Enamel in pure white.

I opted for this paint selection because I had used the DecoArt Americana line in a previous project and absolutely loved it! It covers the cabinets so well and smooth. My best tip for painting the cabinets by hand, is to use a small roller. I bought foam rollers at first, but didn’t like the finish it gave, so I switch to a smaller 4″ roller. I will provide more details about that later ( you can see roller above).

One of my very favorite things about this paint is it’s non-toxic! Which is awesome since we have so much area to cover and we’re painting while the kids and animals are in the house! There is also a wide variety of colors, over 20 color options to choose from. A little something for everyone!

I will be sharing more tips and details in an upcoming post! Stay tuned! See you soon!
