Old Filing Cabinet Makeover

March 2, 2015 by Fotini Filed Under: 2015, diy, home decor 24 Comments

An office isn’t complete without a filing cabinet! A place to store all those pesky, but important papers! We had an old and beat up black filing cabinet that my husband said he wanted to use in the office. I looked at it, and looked at him… huh? No way! After a couple of days of thinking about how we could afford-ably and easily give this bland piece of office furniture a makeover, my husband surprised me with a fantastic solution!

ย If you haven’t already realized, we love using pallets and incorporating them into our decor! Most of the time this wood is naturally weathered, aged and has so much character! To begin, we removed the drawers and placed the cabinet on its side. We measured the sides, and cut pieces of pallet to match the measurements. We ended up with 4 regular pieces and two narrower pieces so we could maintain the look we were going for. We attached the pallets using . We opted for this because it’s easy to use, quick and durable. Usingย , we placed a scrap piece of over the top and clamped it down, top and bottom. We repeated this technique for the entire piece, allowing each side a solid 30 minutes of drying time. Using some we already had, I just painted them gold and we screwed them into place. We also added for easy movement!

I’m really happy with how it turned and since we used all items that we already had, it cost us literally nothing!! I love those kind of projects ๐Ÿ˜‰ ย So what do you think of this unique, rustic piece?

Sharing this project on these lovely blogs!

I have 2 of the ugliest file cabinets you can imagine, hiding in a closet, AND a need for a computer desk. Plus an unused white door. Hmmm. I think I see a project taking shape! Thanks for the inspiration.

    Hi,
This is a good idea for me to start on. The only exceptions I’ll make is using thinner boards & since my husband makes wooden handles I’ll use them.
    Thanks for the push! ๐Ÿ™‚

I love the use of pallet wood on your old filing cabinet. I actually have a 2 drawer filing cabinet we purchased from Walmart years ago and I took it apart to redo it and I have tons of pallet wood awaiting a new home! Thanks for the idea…
