Homemade Apple Butter

September 18, 2017 by Fotini Filed Under: fall, recipes

A tradition my little ones and I love each year is going apple picking! We head to the local apple orchard and pick our own apples right off the tree! Seeing the smiles on their little faces as they find the perfect apples, is priceless! Not to mention, I get to make some awfully tasty goodies with them! One specific request I had from my 11-year old son was to make apple butter!

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have saw my Instastories where I shared the process of making homemade apple butter. If not, you’re in luck because I wanted to share this simple, 2- ingredient recipe! Ya’ll, it’s only 2 ingredients! You can’t get any better than that!

If you’re able, visit a local apple orchard and go apple picking with the family! It’s one of our absolute favorite traditions to do together every year. Picking your own apples off of the tree is just a fun thing to do. If you’re not able to visit an orchard for your apples, store bought apples are just as good. We picked Gala apples for this recipe, but you can choose any apple you like. I didn’t count the exact number of apples I used, but I’m guessing approx. 15. Maybe not quite that many because some of these apples are large in size.

Begin by dicing your apples up into cubes (peels on) and adding them to your crockpot. Fill the crockpot to the top. Cook on high for 4 hours. After cooking for 4 hours, you will have a nice soft, mushy consistency. Add all the cooked apples to your blender. Pulse on puree setting until completely blended. Give your blend a good stir to ensure complete smoothness. Add the mixture back to your crockpot. Add about 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon and cook for an additional 1-2 hours on high. I suggest cooking for the 2 hours because you will have a thicker consistency.

Individually can your apple butter and chill in the fridge before serving. And that’s it folks! It seriously does not get any better than that! I was able to fill 3 small mason jars. So you will have plenty to share! This would make a great treat to give your family, friends or neighbors!

I’m curious, have you ever made apple butter before? Share your tips and recipes below in the comments!

See you next time friends 🙂
